Day 5: Tuesday 11.6.2007
Traveling from Brussels to Copenhagen
We were a little bummed we had to leave Tuesday… we loved Brussels. Plus, as it turns out, Jen’s cousin Mikael will be playing in Brussels tonight with his band Wilco. We had some free time that morning, and we thought we’d try to meet him at the place where they were playing that night. Mikael had told me in an email prior to our trip that he’d probably get in around 12 that day, so we headed over ther about that time. But it never occurred to me what we’d say to the staff of the place when we got there… wilco is pretty dang popular. I never thought I’d be this guy, but I walked right in the front door to try to convince them that I knew one of the band members, and he was expecting me, expecting to be roughly bounced by some thug.As it turned out, the girl in the booth either didn’t speak English, or pretended not to to get me to go away since I was clearly a nut. Oh, well. Had to try. Sorry Mikael!
So we had time for one last relaxig cup of coffee in the grand place in the only sunshine we saw our entire stay. it was maybe the best cup i ever had in my life. then we went back to the hotel and collected our bags. The cab ride from the airport to the hotel had been really expensive (40€ for a 10 minute ride) so we opted to take the train back (5€ for both of us!). but we had so much friggin luggage that I had to make two trips! Ugh… my back hurt for a few days after that.
Once we got all our stuff off the train at the airport, the trip to Copenhagen was smooth sailing. Bennett was feeling much better having been on a fever reducing medicine, so he did pretty well too. It was absolutely wonderful to come out of the airport to find a bunch of friendly faces waiting for us.
We got back to Inger’s (Jen’s Aunt) place, and hauled the bags up three flights, and spent some time together, which was awesome. The evening included a fantastic meal and a little wine. And, of course, a Tuborg! Aaahhhh…..Inger’s staying at Gert’s house while we’re here, so we’ve got full run of the place.
We loved Belgium. Here is a list of what I will miss most:
1. Fantastic beer
2. Fantastic chocolate
3. Fantastic beer
4. Beautiful lace (ok, not really)
5. Fantastic beer (and chocolate)
6. Beautiful architecture
7. The sound of church bells tolling everywhere
8. The sound of people speaking in French. It’s beautiful.
9. Fantastic beer. Really! My favorite was one called Leffe.
10. Those cool European police sirens.
